Li played the final match of her stellar career at Wimbledon 2014 before retiring due to a chronic knee injury two months later.

Now enjoying life as a housewife and businesswoman, the two-time Grand Slam singles champion spares no effort to en

Her passion for the sport remains undiminished and shone through at Tuesday’s event at Beijing’s

With more international tournaments visiting the country and strong government support and investment, tenni

Innovation will drive economy in the futurepowered robot welco

Delivering the Government Work Report to the national legislature on Tuesday, Premier Li Keqiang said the country would do mo

re to boost innovation while laying the emphasis on ethical scientific research. Over the past few years, the fast development of Ch

ina’s science and technology sector has caught the eye of people both at home and abroad. How did China make brea

kthrough achievements in the science and technology sector? And what direction should the sector take in the futu

re? Two experts share their views on the issue with China Daily’s Liu Jianna. Excerpts follow:

  Several factors behind progress

China has progressed by leaps and bounds in the science a

nd technology sector because of multiple factors. First, thanks to its rapid economic growth, Chin

a has invested huge funds in the science and technology sector. And the results are there for all to see.

Second, China has used its research and development funds more effectively by employing more researchers in the field o

f science and technology thanks to the rising number of Chinese researchers and their somewhat low average income.

By trying to consolidate foothold in CEE, Washington

After the aggressive speech by US Assistant Secretary Aaron Wess Mitchell in late October advocating the US to win influence in

Central and Eastern Europe, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo recently visited Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.

Although Pompeo’s visit covered a wide array of issues including the Middle East, China, Russia, energy

, and security, they pointed to US ambitions in winning the race for influence in Central and Eastern Europe.

Since US President Donald Trump took office, US capabilities have been on the decline along with its willingness to prov

ide public goods to the international community. Although Washington clings to America First doctrine, it doesn’t mean it f

ollows a path of isolationism. The US sometimes provides regional goods to rebuild rules that are more favorable to it.

The US strategy in Central and Eastern Europe follows this logic.

The most important US presence in Central and Eastern Europe i

s the security cooperation under the NATO security framework. If the US wants to s

trengthen its clout in this region, it must win favor from those countries that strike a balance among major powers.

Becoming a member of the winter swimming club

Students who want to join the club must get a university certificate for deep water swimming and a recommendation from no less than tw

o senior members of the club, according to Yin Ximing, a Ph.D. student at the Economics and Ma

nagement School of Tsinghua University, who is also the founder of the university’s winter swimming club.

The university is supportive of the sport, and winter swimming is carried out in the sc

hool’s West Lake Swimming Pool, which has an outdoor deep water zone and shallow end.

Early in 1919, Tsinghua University incorporated swimming into its school regula

tions, stating that those who weren’t able to swim couldn’t graduate or study abroad. The rule was later suspended.
