An inferno that destroyed the spire and a large portion of the wooden roof structure of the 12th-century Notre Dame Cathedral in Pa
ris on Monday reinforced a cautionary message to Chinese authorities about the need to better protect vulnerable heritage sites.
The National Cultural Heritage Administration held a staff meeting on Tuesday night at wh
ich officials discussed the Paris fire and six major fires that have taken place at Chinese cultural heritage sites this year.
“The fire at Notre Dame in Paris rang the warning bell for us,” Song Xi
nchao, deputy director of the administration, said in an interview on Tuesday.
“The safety of cultural heritage sites is a red line that can never be crossed. It’s a global issue,” he said.
The six fires were in Sichuan, Fujian, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces, officials said.
On Jan 6, a hall at Yunyan Temple in Jiangyou, Sichuan province, burned down. On
Feb 2, a wooden family temple from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in Nanchang, Jiangxi, was destroyed by fire.

This is the 10th consecutive monthly decrease, according to the C
hina Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Changjiang Times reported.
The MPV sector saw the largest sales decline, 20.2 percent to 130,000 units in the pas
t month, while SUVs and sedans dropped 10.7 and 12 percent, respectively.
The decreases in 2019’s first quarter are mild compared with those at the end of the last year, CPCA said.
As the State-VI emission standards will be implemented from July 1 this
year, some Japanese brands have launched corresponding products ahead of their co
unterparts, and performed well in sales and consumer confidence, CPCA said.
“Automobile sales in North China, and those in the county and township level, are still weak,” the association added.
For residents in Huojugou village in China’s Changbai Mountains, a train whistl
e is a euphonious sound that will bring gurgling water to their kitchen and bathhouse.
For 44 years, the mountainous village and several others in northeast China’s Jilin Province
have relied on a train, which only has one locomotive and one tank car, to provide their water supply.
The train commutes between the towns of Songshu and Baihe, nestled deep in Changbai Mountain. Since 1975, it has run for m
ore than 1.6 million km, delivering water to over 2,600 nearby villagers that had limited access to clean water.
Though cisterns have been built to store water unloaded from the trains, villagers along the line
still keep the tradition of welcoming the train in person, clanking their buckets and bottles.

“Then the small train sent water right to our doorsteps, and it’s amaz

ons influenced ecological structuring and evolutionary drivers during the Cambrian explosion,” said Allis
on Daley, a paleontologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, who was not involved in the study.

Though Oppo outgrew the industry average to achieve an annual expansion rate of 1.5 pe
rcent in that time-frame, there is still a pressing need to look for new opportunities, Wu said.
